Lena: Bonsoir, Murdoch. L'habituel? (Evening, Murdoch. The usual?)
Murdoch: Oui. And whatever's the dinner special.
Fausto: Better watch out, college girl. Your teachers catch you talking French, they'll boot you right out of that fancy school.
Lena: They wouldn't -- well, an administrator, maybe. But I won't get caught.
Riley: I don't know why a smart girl like you wastes her time. You'll bleed yourself dry jumping their hoops, and what'll you get for it? A piece of paper. Nobody gets anywhere in this town unless they're a somebody. Come out of Lowtown and you don't stand a chance. You'll end up in some dead-end job watching the boss's kids get promoted over your head, a salary that's a joke, a wife that hates you --
Lena: Wife, huh?
Fausto: Riley my man, for a lawyer, you sure don't watch what comes out a your mouth.

French has been common in the poorer areas of upper North America since the Quebecois Expatriations of the 2110s, with most residents mixing French and English on a haphazard basis. Attitudes towards 'bastard's French' tend to vary depending on the local attitudes towards the lower classes.

Here, Fausto's refers to an ordinance passed a few years previous forbidding French in government buildings and educational establishments. In the way of such ordinance, it has had no noticeable effect on the speaking of French, but it has allowed the city to collect a tidy sum in fines.
