XHans: What do you think?
Penn: I think it's a set of cold cases with mishandled crime scenes and reports that scream 'but suspicious death is two whole pages of paperwork!' Is this a trick question?
Hans: I'm the rookie. I might have missed something. So shake 'em till someone rattles?
Penn: The last refuge of the clueless.
Hans: Maren didn't try to buy us off.
Penn: So he's honest. Or broke. Or he's playing it cool until we've got something besides vague suspicions to wave at him. Or he's on the phone right now to his buddy in Admin seeing if he can get us pulled off the case. Or half a dozen other things, none of which will be any use to us unless they stem from a useful guilty reflex. The number of times I've had a promising lead only to find the perp was stealing the petty cash fund or screwing the family pet. God. It's enough to make you lose all faith in humanity. What I really want is to shake someone badly enough that they kill again. Give me a nice warm corpse and you'll see this case go somewhere.
Hans: Plus, it'd cut down on the interviews.
Penn: Optimist. My luck'll never hold good enough for a killing spree.
